Ask most golfers where they which course they would love to play if money and time allowed, and you may hear them mention such places as Augusta, Pebble Beach, or St Andrews to name just a few. As captivating as these courses would be, golfers with a spirit of adventure may want to consider something less conventional next time they plan a golfing holiday – here are some of the world's craziest golf courses:
Uummannaq Golf Course, Greenland
Uummannaq hosts the World Ice Golf Championships in March of each year, testing the skills of ice golfers from around the world as they descend on eighteen holes of frozen earth each year.
The course layout takes golfers over several glacial icebergs, in weather conditions that cause temperatures to drop as low as -50 degrees Celsius. The holes are made larger to allow for the extreme slipperiness of the "greens", while fluorescent golf balls are used so that players can locate their ball after taking a shot.
Merapi Golf Club, Indonesia
Golfers who love to flirt with danger will appreciate this course, which is built adjacent to an active volcano. Although the thought of teeing-off in the danger zone may be enough to scare the feint-hearted among us, play at Merapi is seldom disrupted by volcanic eruptions.
The Lost City Golf Course, South Africa
This scenic golf course is located at the Sun City resort in South Africa, and is a must-see for any visitor who is serious about golf. While the course complies with international standards of design and maintenance, one of its features makes it unique – the 13th hole.
Known as the 'unluckiest hole in golf', the 13th hole features a water component that is home to 38 crocodiles – golfers whose ball finds the water are advised to take relief and move on to the next shot.
