For fans of current world number one Lee Westwood the 2010 season has provided much cause for celebration. Westwood overtook Tiger Woods to clinch the coveted title on October 31st and has successfully defended his title ever since. Having overcome several injuries and career setbacks, Westwood has proved that persistence and courage can lead to greatness on and off the course. The race to become world number one aside, there have been many exciting developments in world golf during the 2010 season.
From the Molinari brothers to Germany’s Martin Kaymer to Rickie Fowler of the United States, golf fans can look forward to more action-packed rounds next season from golf’s young stallions. With US PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem announcing that his focus for the next season is on the youth, these talented young players should be making their mark on the prestigious US PGA Tour.
The 2010 season also saw the passing of African-American golfer Bill Powell, who died at the age of 93. Powell was the first African-American to build and operate his own golf course in Canton, Ohio after being denied access to a public course. He has been recognized as a pioneer by the PGA of America and will be remembered by golf fans as a pioneer.
