Player Profile: Nick Taylor

On Sunday, Canada’s Nick Taylor won his first-ever US PGA Tour event with a victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship. In this week’s player profile we take a look at the early career of this talented player as he establishes himself at the top level of North American golf.

Early life

26-year-old Taylor was born in the city of Winnipeg in Canada’s Manitoba province, and grew up in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The golfing bug first bit him at a young age, with Taylor focusing on his game intensely during his high school years. By the time he was nineteen he had won the Canadian Amateur Championship and was on his way to the University of Washington where he undertook a challenging degree in economics.

Amateur career

During the early years of his career, Taylor took part in many amateur and professional tournaments in North America. After missing the cut at the 2008 US Open, he returned in 2009 and finished tied 36th to win the award for Low Amateur. A strong performance at the 2008 Canadian Open saw him make the cut at his home country’s premier golf event, and by 2009 he had risen to number one on the World Amateur Rankings. Taylor turned professional in 2010.

Turning pro

Taylor’s professional debut on the PGA Canada Tour was the beginning of a new chapter in his career, as he weathered the storm of competition and a hectic tour schedule to retain his Tour card for three successive seasons.

2013 was Taylor’s best year on the Canadian tour, with an overall 7th place on the order of merit which won him an exemption to the Web.com Tour in 2014. He made his debut on the PGA Tour just a few weeks ago, but wasted no time in lifting his first professional trophy on the top-ranked US golf circuit.

Fans should keep a close eye on Taylor as he continues the trend of talented Canadian players who are making their presence felt on the US PGA Tour.
