On Sunday America's Ben Martin won his first PGA title at the Shriner's Hospital for Children Open. This week's player profile introduces golf fans to the newest champion on the US PGA Tour as he makes his name at the top level of professional golf.
Growing up on golf
27-year-old Martin was born and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina. His interest in golf peaked during his high school years, when balanced golf and academics prepared him for a successful amateur career.
In 2009 Martin finished second at the US Amateur, and the following season made his professional debut at the age of 23.
Professional career
Martin made his professional debut on the EGolf Professional Tour, winning his first tournament in his rookie season at the 2010 Forest Oaks Classic. At the end of the season he successfully completed the PGA Tour's Q School to earn a place on the Tour's 2011 season.
Despite a promising start to the season, Martin found himself unable to retain his Tour card at the end of 2011, having made just 12 cuts at 25 events. Not to be discouraged, he played on the Web.com Tour in 2012 and 2013, weathering the competition to win two tournaments: the 2013 United Leasing Championship and Mylan Classic.
Martin returned to the PGA Tour last season with renewed determination and a wealth of experience. After honing his skills on second-tier tours for several years, he soon climbed the PGA Tour's rankings and made enough cuts to retain his Tour card this season – setting himself up for victory.
Sunday's final round victory over a field of experienced champions is a milestone in Martin's career. Just shy of 30, the champion has made his mark on the PGA Tour. Golf fans should keep an eye on this talented player who has many years of golfing excellence ahead of him.
