Britain’s Paul Casey won his first tournament in more than two years ago at the Irish Open. As the past champion at European and PGA Tour events celebrates his fifteenth professional victory, we take a look at the milestones in his successful golfing career.
35-year-old Casey was born in Cheltenham, England and grew up in Weybridge, Surrey. After discovering golf in his teenage years the young Casey showed a natural ability and discipline that allowed his game to develop rapidly. After graduating from high school, Casey crossed the Atlantic to commence his studies at Arizona State University.
As a college amateur in the United States, Casey began to shine early on. He won three Pac-10 Championships in a row between 1998 and 2000, becoming the first male amateur to do so. At the 2000 Pac-10 Championship Casey beat Tiger Woods’ course record with a finishing score of 23 under par.
In 2001 Casey returned to Britain and joined the European Tour. He enjoyed a successful rookie year, placing in the top 10 after just a few starts and winning his first title off his eleventh start at the Scottish PGA Championship.
Since then, the Englishman has won 12 events on the European Tour – including 2006 Johnny Walker Championship, the HSBC World Matchplay Championship, the 2009 BMW Championship, and two victories at the co-sanctioned Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
Casey spends much of his time on the European Tour, having joined the PGA Tour for the first time in 2005. In the 2009 season he won the Houston Open, his only PGA Tour title to date.
On Sunday, Casey overcame challenging weather conditions to edge out compatriot Robert Rock and the Hollander Joost Luiten for a victory at the Irish Open. This win puts the champion back on the map as he passes the milestone of 15 career wins on the European Tour. With ample time ahead of him in his professional career, Casey may yet increase this number to 20 or beyond.
