On Sunday the American Kevin Streelman won his first PGA Tour title after almost 160 starts when he clinched victory at the Tampa Bay Championship. As this talented golfer begins to reap the rewards of his hard work and dedication to the game, this week's player profile introduces golf fans to the latest champion in North American professional golf.
34-year-old Streelman was born in 1978 in Winfield, Illinois. After completing his high school education Streelman studied at Duke University where he played collegiate golf. Following his graduation he took the decision to turn professional in 2003 and has been a regular contender on the North American golf circuit ever since.
Streelman's foray into the world of professional golf was by no means easy. The young golfer began his professional career on the Hooters Tour, taking part in events on that tour as well as smaller tournaments throughout North America.
A self-made and tenacious career sportsman, Streelman took to the road and drove himself along America's length and breadth in search of opportunities to compete in tournaments. To support himself financially, the young Streelman worked as a caddy whenever the opportunity arose, gaining valuable practice time as he kept his sights on the top level of professional golf – the PGA Tour.
In 2007, Streelman won his first title on the Hooter's Tour when he was victorious at the Opelika Classic. The following year, he tied for the lead after the first round of the US Open before finishing in 53rd place. Following these early successes, Streelman won an exemption to play on the US PGA Tour, the final leg of a long journey that has seen the happy-go-lucky player burn out three cars on the roads of America as he weathered many difficulties in search of a successful golfing career.
As Kevin Streelman joins the winners circle, fans can expect many more exciting performances from this tenacious and dedicated golfer.
