Golf fans who were patiently following the weather-delayed action at the PGA's opening Tournament of Champions last week will be familiar with the Kapalua Resort's championship course – one of the most beautifully located golf courses on earth.
The Kapalua Resort is a premier tourism destination on the island of Maui in Hawaii, recognised as Hawaii's best resort by Leisure Golf Magazine and sought-after by golf tourists from around the globe. The resort offers luxury accommodation, a golf school, and several shopping and dining options, making it a popular choice for golf travellers.
Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the par 73 Plantation Course extends over 7,411 yards of island splendour. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean on one side and a beautiful pineapple plantation on the other, the spectacular course eases the pressure of a challenging round of golf with its beautiful location and one-of-a-kind scenery.
Because the Plantation Course offers a challenge to the PGA Tour's winner's circle at the beginning of each season, making par is no easy task for the amateur golfer. However, the course design caters for both pros and amateurs, and visitors can expect an enjoyable round of golf at Kapalua.
The first hole greets players with a magnificent view of the ocean. The par 4 meanders over two sets of fairways, flanked by challenging bunkers, and an ocean-facing green where the pin is protected from the back by a row of trees which offer a respite from the sea breeze.
The par 5 fifth hole features an extensive dogleg fairway which provides a challenge to long hitters while demanding accuracy of every shot – the rough is just a few yards away, with its dense bushes and trees which are best avoided. The elevated green is flanked at the rear by several bunkers which require accuracy in the short game if they are to be avoided.
The seventeenth hole is among the most challenging at the Plantation Course. Measuring 508 yards when played from the championship tee, the hole consists of two fairways with dense rough in-between. However, players who manage to negotiate this challenging course will be treated to a magnificent view as they sink their putts against an ocean backdrop.
