On Sunday the American Harris English won his first-ever PGA Tour title at the St Jude Classic. As this young player makes his presence felt in North American golf, this week’s player profile introduces fans to one of the Tour’s latest rising stars.
23-year-old English was born in 1989 in Thomasville, Georgia. Having grown up in the golf-crazy southern state, the tall and naturally athletic English spent many hours honing his technique during his teenage years. During his high school years, English achieved his first success in amateur golf: In 2005, at the age of 14, he won his first Tennessee Individual State Title.
With his high school years behind him, English enrolled at the University of Georgia in the city of Athens, majoring in Business Science. He played on the university’s Bulldog golf team during his time at UG, graduating in 2011.
Following his graduation, English played as an amateur on the second-tier Nationwide Tour in the 2011 season. Weathering the pressures of a professional golf tour with apparent ease, English was victorious at the 2011 Children’s Hospital Classic, winning his first professional title after just two starts on the Nationwide Tour. At the end of 2011, English earned his PGA Tour card after a 13th place finish at the Qualifying Tournament.
English enjoyed a solid and successful rookie year on the PGA Tour in 2012. He made 22 cuts in 27 tournaments, carded three top-10 finishes for the season, and earned over $ 1 million to retain his tour card this season.
English’s victory at the St Jude Classic on Sunday is a major career milestone for the young Georgian as he carves himself a career at the top level of North American golf. Tall, athletic, and cool-headed, this young champion is set to continue his rise on the Tour as he gains in experience and continues to perfect his technique.
