The European Tour travelled to Dubai last week for the DP World Tour Championship which was won in style by world number one Rory McIlroy.
The Northern Irishman, who started Sunday's final round with a bogey on the first hole, quickly made up for lost time and finally carded an impressive 6-under-par 66 at the end of the final round. As the warm desert weather kept energy levels high on the course, McIlroy weathered a challenge from Britain's Justin Rose who scored a spectacular 10-under-par 62 in the final round.
In the end however, McIlroy scored an impressive succession of five birdies on the back nine and lifted the trophy after winning by a margin of two strokes. Rose came in second place, while overnight leader Luke Donald shared third place with South Africa's Charl Schwartzel.
Commenting on his recent string of victories, McIlroy told reporters that his game had reached a new level this season, mostly due to his ability to win under difficult conditions. The 23-year-old world number one had been suffering from sunstroke and a fever over the weekend, but nonetheless managed to score a commanding victory on the final day. McIlroy praised former world number one Tiger Woods for winning many tournaments in less-than-ideal circumstances – an ability he wishes to emulate as he tightens his grip on the number one spot himself.
The US PGA Tour is in recess until 2013, with the qualifying championship scheduled for next week. The offseason Chevron Classic, hosted by Tiger Woods, will take place from November 29th at the Sherwood Golf Club in California.
As the 2013 season approaches, two more talented European golfers have announced their decision to play on the US PGA Tour next season. Martin Kaymer of Germany and Belgium's Nicolas Colsaerts have announced that they will be playing events in the United States next year. Other European Tour players who will be joining the PGA Tour in 2013 include Sweden's Peter Hanson, Japan's Ryo Ishikawa and the Englishman David Lynn.
