Stenson defends DP World Tour title in Dubai
The European Tour’s 2014 season came to a dramatic end on Sunday when Sweden’s Henrik Stenson won the DP World Tour Championship for the second year running.
The final round took place in typically hot Dubai weather, with the pressure to win heating up along with the desert sun. Stenson was level-pegging with his playing partner, Rafael Cabrera-Bello of Spain, at the turn, but a series of unfortunate shots saw the Swede slip behind as the tournament’s final stretch began.
Holding his nerve to par the 12th hole, Stenson gathered himself and watched with some relief as Cabrera-Bello’s ball found the water at the 16th and 17th holes. Stenson, by contrast, found his second wind during the closing holes of the tournament to birdie the last two holes for a two-stroke victory.
Having reversed his fortunes late in the tournament to claim his second consecutive win – and a second place finish on the Race to Dubai leader board which was won by Rory McIlroy – Stenson lifted the trophy with a great 2014 season behind him.
