Patrick Reed of the United States was victorious at the Humana Challenge on Sunday, beating compatriot Ryan Palmer by two strokes to clinch the title.
As the pressure mounted on Sunday at PGA West in La Quinta, California, overnight leader Reed overcame several poor shots on his way to victory. The American began the final round with an impressive seven shot lead, but a host of bogeys – with some birdies thrown in for good measure – reduced his lead over the first ten holes of the tournament.
As Zach Johnson finished his round with a string of birdies to finish in third place, Reed spent the final hours of the tournament managing his scorecard to prevent a playoff. A birdie at the eleventh and a series of pars on the back nine allowed the easy-going 23-year-old to maintain a two-stroke advantage and lift the trophy.
European Tour – Third Career Win for Larrazabal in Abu Dhabi
The European Tour was in the UAE last week, where Spain’s Pablo Larrazabal lifted the trophy at the Abu Dhabi Championship.
The competition was intense during Sunday’s final round; with world number five Phil Mickelson firing on all cylinders over the front nine. The American carded three birdies in the first ten holes of the day, with Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy hot on his heels. However, neither player was able to weather the competition from Larrazabal, who carved himself a one-stroke victory on the back nine.
The 30-year-old Spaniard started the day with a three-stroke deficit to make up, and after mixed fortunes on the front nine he set his sights on victory after the turn. An impressive bunker chip resulted in a birdie at the eighth for Larrazabal, with a follow-up birdie at the eleventh hole putting him in direct competition with Mickelson.
After his final birdie at the thirteenth hole the Spaniard kept his cool until the end of the round, with Mickelson and McIlroy failing to seize back the lead. After a few tense moments on the eighteenth green, Larrazabal lifted he trophy to become a three- time winner on the European Tour.
