In the United States, Henrik Stenson of Sweden lifted the trophy at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday.
The weather-delayed tournament entered its final round with Sergio Garcia in the lead. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, his luck was not consistent on Monday and he ended the tournament in fourth place. All eyes were on Stenson, whose five-under-par 66 during the final round allowed him to win by a two-stroke margin over America’s Steve Stricker. The Canadian Graham DeLaet finished in third place.
Celebrating his first win on American soil since the 2009 Players Championship, Stenson told journalists that his recent good form had allowed him to capture the title. The Swede was runner-up at the British Open and took third place at the PGA Championship this season, setting up the right conditions for a win.
Stenson is now ranked number one in the FedEx Cup standings, surpassing Tiger Woods to claim the top position.
In Europe, Gregory Bourdy of France won the Wales Open by two strokes on Sunday.
The final round began with America’s Peter Uihlein in the lead by a margin of three strokes, but four bogeys on Sunday reduced his status to runner-up.
Bourdy began the final round with an eagle on the second, following up with birdies on the ninth, and eleventh to take the lead. The Frenchman bogeyed three holes on Sunday, but erased these with a string of three birdies on a row during the final holes of the tournament to win decisively.
Soren Kjeldsen of Denmark shot an impressive final round of 66 – the lowest score of any player in the top five– but was unable to erase the effects of high scoring during the first three days of the tournament. The Dane finished in third place, a stroke behind Uihlein.
As a Ryder Cup qualifying event, the Wales Open may have opened the door for Bourdy to represent Europe at next year’s event. The Frenchman’s last victory on the European Tour was in 2009 at the Hong Kong Open.
