On the US PGA Tour, Sweden’s Jonas Blixt lifted the trophy at his second professional tournament when he won the Greenbrier Classic on Sunday.
As weather conditions around The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier worsened on Sunday, overnight leader Johnson Wagner seemed to suffer a loss of form. As the American struggled with three dropped shots on the back nine, Blixt held his game steady to card a three-under-par 67 in the final round – an impressive performance from the Swede, who started the final round four strokes off the lead.
Wagner had to settle for second place, a position he shared with fellow-American Jimmy Walker and the Australians Matt Jones and Steven Bowditch.
For 29-year-old Blixt, who won the Frys.com Open just under a year ago, a second win on the PGA Tour confirms the Swede’s place in the top tier of professional golfers.
In Europe, Northern Ireland’s Graeme McDowell seized victory over the South African Richard Sterne to clinch his ninth title European Tour title at the French Open on Sunday.
The two players tied for the lead at the end of the third round, and when play began on Sunday it became clear that a showdown was brewing. Despite a solid performance earlier in the tournament, Sterne faltered over the opening holes to drop three shots before the turn.
McDowell, on the other hand, was primed for victory as he birdied three holes on the front nine and two on the back to clinch the title. This win comes at just the right time for McDowell, also known to fans as G-Mac, as he breaks a winning drought and asserts himself once again on the European Tour.
Speaking to journalists after his victory, the Northern Irishman revealed that he has been working on the psychology of his game in recent months, learning to calm his emotions and stay focused to the end. With this renewed focus, McDowell is likely to be a serious contender on the Tour as the second half of the season approaches.
