Golf Results - 2013 August 11

In North America, the 95th US PGA Championship was won by local favourite Jason Dufner in a two shot victory over compatriot Jim Furyk.

Dufner began the final round in sunny weather on Sunday with a one-shot advantage over Furyk, and despite a competitive field the American extended his lead by one more shot over the final 18 holes of the tournament. Dufner’s mastery of the short game was in the spotlight during the final round as he made easy work of the tricky lies at Oak Hill Country Club and carded three birdies on the front nine.

With two holes left to play, Dufner’s game seemed to slacken a little as he carded bogeys on the 17th and 18th holes. However, this minor setback had no bearing on the final result. The easy-going American recorded his first major victory on Sunday, marking an important milestone in his golfing career.

Dufner was followed by Jim Furyk, who took second place, and the Swede Henrik Stenson who finished third. Stenson has recorded a number of top-10 finishes this season as he continues to polish his game.

Tiger Woods was widely expected to break his drought of major wins at this year’s PGA Championship, but the world number one experienced his share of difficulties at this year’s tournament. Unable to break par in all four rounds, Woods finished well behind the leaders and will have to wait until next season to win another major.

Phil Mickelson was also prevented from adding a second PGA Championship title to his list of majors as he sets his sights on a grand slam in his last few years on the PGA Tour.

The European Tour remains in recess until next week, as players travelled to the United States for the PGA Championship. The tour commences on Thursday with the Johnny Walker Championship.
