In the United States, the American Harris English won his first title on the PGA Tour when he clinched the St Jude Classic on Sunday.

English held on to a shaky lead during Sunday’s final round to beat compatriot Scott Stallings by two strokes for the title. Stallings and English shared the lead on several occasions during the final round, with the champion falling back by two strokes at the fifteenth hole. However, Stalling’s lead was short-lived and as his challenger faded, English responded with two birdies at the closing three holes to secure his victory.

Stallings had to settle with second place, a position he shared with fellow-American Phil Mickelson.
For 23-year-old English, a maiden win on the PGA Tour may just be the career breakthrough that the young American has been waiting for.

In Europe, Joost Luiten of the Netherlands was victorious at the Lyoness Open in the Austrian town of Atzenbrugg, winning his second title on the European Tour.

Luiten, who lead the tournament from round two, held his nerve during a spell of bad weather which delayed the final round to clinch the title. With the talented Thomas Bjorn of Denmark hot on his heels, Luiten’s lead was reduced to a single stroke when lightning threatened to strike the course and play was temporarily stopped.

Soon after the weather delay however, Luiten was back in fine form. He shrugged off Bjorn’s challenge and carded a one-under-par 71 for the final round, an achievement in itself considering the difficult playing conditions that suddenly appeared on Sunday.

Luiten is now a two-time winner on the European Tour, having won the co-sanctioned Johor Open in Malaysia in 2011. At 27, this talented player can look forward to many more tournaments on the European Tour, where his fans can expect to see him in fine form.
