On the US PGA Tour, America’s Derek Ernst was victorious at the Wells Fargo Championship, beating David Lynn of the United Kingdom in a final round playoff.

Ernst, who is a rookie on the Tour this season, sealed his first-ever victory at the top level of American golf when he held out to challenge his elder rival to a playoff at the Quail Hollow Golf Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.

After sinking a four-foot birdie putt at the final hole to force a playoff, Ernst only needed a par to win on the first playoff hole after Lynn struggled his way through heavy weather. The Briton’s errant tee shot landed in deep rough, with his second shot landing the ball in a greenside bunker. A miscalculated approach shot and a chip that placed the ball eight feet from the cup sealed Lynn’s fate, while an elated Ernst celebrated his first win on the PGA Tour in his debut year.

The European Tour travelled to China this week, where the Australian Brett Rumford won his second title in a row at the China Open.

Rumford, who also won last week’s Ballantine’s Championship, surged to victory on Sunday with an impressive six birdies over the first 14 holes of the Tianjin Binhai Lake Golf Course. Although the Australian bogeyed the last two holes, he was still four strokes ahead of the Finn Mikko Ilonen after 18 holes.

Two significant victories over the past fortnight have propelled Rumford from 138th position to the top of the European Tour’s money list. Sunday’s victory marks his fifth win on the European Tour, securing the Australian’s reputation as a strong contender at any important tournament. Expressing his happiness to journalists after lifting the trophy, Rumford said he was “speechless” at having won twice in a row on the European Tour.
