In the United States, Matt Kuchar won his second title of the year when he beat Kevin Chappell to the trophy at the Memorial Tournament.

As the tournament entered its final round, overnight leader Kuchar held on to his lead despite Chappell’s charge on the back nine. With birdies on four of the final six holes, Chappell was unable to knock Kuchar from the top of the leader board, and as fans and the tournament host Jack Nicklaus looked on, the American birdied the final hole of the tournament to seal his victory.

As windy weather conditions eased on Sunday after a week of challenging playing conditions, Kuchar took advantage of the calmer breeze to birdie every par five on the course at Muirfield Village. After sinking his final birdie of the tournament Kuchar shook the hand of Nicklaus, his long-time idol, who presented him with the trophy.

On the European Tour, the Finnish golfer Mikko Ilonen was victorious for the first time in almost six years when he won the Nordea Masters in Stockholm, Sweden.

Ilonen carded a final round score of 69 to finish the tournament at 21-under-par, beating local favourite Jonas Blixt by three strokes to lift the trophy. The Austrian Bernd Wiesberger was a shot behind Blixt in third place.

Ilonen’s victory was not a surprise to many, as the Finn set himself up for success with an overnight lead following a spectacular third round. Sunday’s final round was almost perfect for Ilonen, with the exception of a bogey at the 12th hole which did very little to stop the champion’s push for victory on the back nine.

Ilonen is no stranger to the Nordea Masters, having won the event in 2007 – his last victory before Sunday’s win. As he finds himself back in the European winner’s circle, this talented player may yet surprise us with another victory in the near future.
