Amazing Facts from the World of Professional Golf

The world of professional golf is full of amazing extremes. The talented and highly skilled players who weather the challenge of competing for the trophy each weekend, and the impressive golf courses that host them, are great fodder for record keepers. Here are some the most impressive facts and statistics from the golfing world.

Longest hitters
  • The longest-hitting player in Europe this season is Sweden’s Henrik Stenson, whose average is 326.3 yards.
  • The player with the longest driving average on the US PGA Tour is Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, with an average length of 317.8 yards.

From the history books: The longest drive on the PGA Tour was technically made by Carl Hooper at the 1992 Texas Open – at a whopping 787 yards – but the shot involved several lucky bounces and a long roll down a cart path and isn’t officially recognised in the record books.

Master putters

As the old saying goes, you drive for show and putt for dough – here are some players who have taken those words to heart.

  • The player who has made the highest percentage of one-putts on the PGA Tour so far this season is Peter Mainati, who sunk 48.8% of his putts in one stroke.
  • Peter Whiteford is the European Tour’s best putter to date this season, carding 26.3 putts per round on average.

Roll it like Tiger: Current world number one Tiger Woods is considered one of the greatest putters of all time. His accuracy on the green is formidable, allowing him to one-putt in situations where many pro golfers would be forced to two-putt or worse.
World’s longest golf hole
Both a long drive and super accuracy on the green are needed at this monster of a hole:

  • The longest golf hole is found in Japan, at the Satsuki Golf Club’s Sano Course. The par-7 seventh hole is 909 yards from tee to green.
