With the European Tour heading to South Africa this week and the PGA Tour preparing for its January stint in Hawaii, the focus of our course review this week is exotic golf locations.
The courses are spread across the globe, but they have one thing in common – unique layouts, exotic locations, and unforgettable scenery. Let’s take a trip to five of the world’s most unique golf courses.
Apes Hill Golf Club – St James, Barbados
Apes Hill Golf Club offers players an opportunity to enjoy 18 holes of pristine golf in a setting that could only be described as an island paradise. At an elevation of 1000 feet above sea level in the center of the island, the course offers commanding views of the sea and is surrounded by lush local vegetation.
Having opened in 2009, Apes Hill is one of the newest golf facilities in the region and should definitely be part of your itinerary next time you visit the Caribbean islands.
Elea Golf Club – Paphos, Cyprus
Nick Faldo’s 18-hole coastal championship course at Elea Estate Golf Club has been described as one of the finest golf facilities in the Mediterranean. Located on a private estate near the town of Paphos, the course features a hybrid links layout with plenty of long grass, rough and an abundance of trees and bunkers.
Although the course at Elea may look open and easy to navigate, with the gentle waves of the Mediterranean rolling by and good golfing weather most months of the year, the course shouldn’t be underestimated- accuracy is key.
Himalayan Golf Course – Pokhara, Nepal
Perched high in the Himalayas, the Himalayan Golf Course is one of the highlights of a trip to the western Nepalese city of Pokhara (also spelled Bokhara).
Set in a breathtaking amphitheater canyon, with commanding views of the mountain range and the unspoiled landscape below, the course has kept its original design, which dates back to the colonial era in Nepal – a truly unique course in a country not usually associated with golf.
